COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Eight of nine
Terrapins scored in double figures as No. 5/6 Maryland cruised by Delaware State
University, 108-33, in non-conference play Thursday evening at the Comcast
Center.
"Coming
into the game, I knew they [Maryland] were good, I just didn't realize how good
until the kids got on the court," stated DSU head coach Ed Davis. "They executed
like a ranked team and we played like an extremely unranked team. This is something that we will work on."
The
loss was DSU's seventh straight, to move them to 2-7 on the year while the
Terrapins stay undefeated at 10-0.
Sophomore
Tasia Bristow (Baltimore, Md.) sank
the first basket of the game for the Lady Hornets, a 3-pointer coming at the
19:17 mark in the first half, giving Del State their lone lead of the game at
3-2.
Through
the first media timeout at 14:47, DSU held their own as they were down by a
score of 14-7. The Terrapins came out of
that timeout and quickly made a statement by going on a 31-4 run over the next
10 minutes. In the final 8:33 of the
first half, Maryland outscored Delaware State, 26-4.
The
Lady Hornets felt tremendous pressure from the Terp defense as they were forced
into four shot-clock violations in the first half and 12 total turnovers.
Del
State went into halftime with a 57-14 deficit.
The Lady Hornets started the second half with four free throws to cut
Maryland's lead to 39, but that was as close as they would get.
Redshirt
freshman Tierra Hawkins (Clinton,
Md.), redshirt sophomore Uchechi Ahaiwe
(Riverdale, Md.) and Bristow each scored seven points to lead DSU. Hawkins also collected six rebounds on the
night.
Eight
of nine Terrapins who saw action scored in double figures and were led by
Laurin Mincy's 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field.
The
Lady Hornets shot a dismal 19.2 percent from the field compared to Maryland's
66.2 percent.
Possibly
the largest stat of the night was Del State's eight points in the paint while
the Terps posted 64.
The
75-point margin of victory is the largest in Maryland school history, but is
not DSU's worst loss in their school history.
The Terps beat their previous best of 71 against the University of
Maryland Eastern Shore (102-31, 12/28/93) and Frostburg State (102-31,
1/31/75). The Lady Hornets have
previously suffered a 77-point loss (116-39) to North Carolina State in the
1996-97 season.
The
biggest storyline coming into the game was the matchup of the Hawkins sisters,
Tierra, and her fraternal twin, Tianna, a junior forward for the Terrapins.
"My
biggest concern was for Tierra not to get into the hype of playing against her
sister and unfortunately that happened," commented Davis. "She's a freshman and we're not trying to put
a lot of pressure on her. We're just
trying to put her in the position that she does well in terms of her
development. She's a naturally good
player."
"Prior
to the game, I wasn't really nervous," Tierra Hawkins remarked. "It ended up that I really was. Playing collegiately is all new to me and to
have all this hype was something new. I
can't deny that I was nervous once I came on the court."
The
Lady Hornets return home on Sunday as they host St. Francis College at 2 p.m.
at Memorial Hall.
