Washington, D.C. (Dec. 31, 2011) --- The Delaware State men's basketball ended 2011 on a sour note, falling to George Washington 77-59 at the Charles E. Smith Center this afternoon. The Hornets dropped their fifth straight game to fall to 4-8 this season. The Colonials snapped a seven game losing streak to improve to 5-8.
Delaware State was led in scoring by freshman guard Amere May, who came off the bench to record a career-high 22 points. May was 8-for-15 from the field, including 3-of-6 from three-point territory. He also knocked down each of his three free throws.
Kendall Gray recorded his first collegiate "double-double." Tallying 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Casey Walker added 10 points for the Hornets.
Delaware State played without starting guard Jay Threatt, who was held out due to bumps and bruises. Threatt has missed two of the last three games. The Hornets also played their fourth straight game without leading scorer Tahj Tate (15.4 ppg), who is serving a team imposed suspension.
Tony Taylor led four GW players in double figures with 20 points. Taylor was 8-for-10 from the field, including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. Lasan Kromah had 15 points, Jabari Edwards 11 and John Kopriva 10 for the Colonials.
The Hornets were outrebounded 39-25 and committed a season-high 19 turnovers in the contest.
Despite playing at Georgia less than 24 hours earlier, Delaware State got off to a good start. The Hornets opened up a 9-6 lead on a three-pointer by Casey Walker with 15:15 left in the first half. DSU led 11-10 before the Colonials took control of the game.
GW outscored the Hornets 27-16 in the final 13:00 of the first half to hold a 37-27 lead at the break.
The Colonials opened the second half with an 18-3 run to blow the game open. David Pellom capped of the run with a lay up to give GW a 55-30 lead with 14:41 left to play. DSU could get no closer than 19 the rest of the way.
Delaware State will play its first game in 2012 on Wednesday (Jan. 4) at North Carolina State. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C.
