Dover, Del. (Dec. 10, 2011) --- Junior center Jamelle Hagins had 21 points, 19 rebounds and five blocks to lead Delaware to a 58-42 win over Delaware State in Memorial Hall this afternoon.
The Hens won for the second time in the last three games to improve to 4-4 on the season, while the Hornets dropped their second straight to fall to 4-5. Delaware also won its second straight over DSU to open up a 10-2 lead in the series between the state's only Division I programs.
Hagins was 9-of -12 from the field and 3-for-3 at the free throw line to post a career scoring high. His 17 rebounds were also a personal best, while the five blocks matched his season high.
Devon Sadler added 16 points for Delaware.
Casey Walker was high scorer for the Hornets with 15 points, while Amere May had a career-high 14. May started his first collegiate game, replacing DSU's leading scorer Tahj Tate (15.4 ppg), who is serving a team-imposed suspension.
Delaware State held its only lead of the game, 8-7, on a jumper by Walker with 10:11 left in the first half. Delaware outscored the Hornets 8-3 in the final 3:04 of the half to take a 25-18 lead at the break.
DSU hit just 6-of-23 shots from the field in the first half (26.1%), while the Hens 8-for-26 from the floor (30.8%) in the opening frame.
Delaware opened the second half with a 17-4 run to take control of the game. Hagins capped off the run with a jumper to give the Hens a 42-22 lead with 13:19 left to play. Hagins had eight points and six rebounds, while Josh Brinkley added four points during the rally.
Delaware State used a 6-0 run to pull to within 14 points (49-35), but the Hens answered with a 7-0 spurt to match their biggest lead of the game.
UD outscored the Hornets 33-24 in the second half. The Hens were 13-for-23 from the field (56.5%), while Delaware State was 9-of-35 from the floor (25.7%) in the final 20 minutes.
The contest was also a battle for family bragging rights between Delaware State senior Jay Threatt and his younger brother Jarvis Threatt, a University of Delaware freshman.
Jay had six points (1-9 FG; 4-4 FT), three assists and three steals for the Hornets, while Jarvis contributed six points (2-6 FGs; 1-2 FT) and three assists to Delaware's win. There were some 80 family members and friends of the brothers in attendance at the game.
Delaware State will take a week off for final exams before returning to action at home against Tennessee State on Dec. 17. Game time is 7:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
