GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Delaware State
University women's basketball team led for the majority of the first half, but
Robert Morris University took second chance points to outlast the Lady Hornets,
75-67, Sunday afternoon in the 10th Annual East Carolina University
Thanksgiving Tournament at Minges Coliseum.
Del
State (2-4) held a 12-point advantage at 32-20 with 5:10 remaining in the first
half before the Colonials (5-1) went on a 17-2 run to head into halftime. RMU's
Artemis Spanou and Kelly Hartwell combined for 13 of the Colonial's points
during the run.
The
Lady Hornets tied the game at 41-41 with a layup from sophomore Tasia Bristow (Baltimore, Md.) and then
took the lead with 15:37 on the clock with a jumper from redshirt freshman Tierra Hawkins (Clinton, Md.). RMU responded with a 6-0 run and never looked
back as they took a 47-43 lead with 13:34 left in the game.
The
Colonials would take their largest lead of the game at 68-55 with 4:03
remaining. The Lady Hornets brought
things within seven off of a layup from sophomore Deanna Harmon (Owings Mills, Md.) with 1:16 left, but it wasn't
enough as RMU let time wind down for the 75-67 win.
Despite
playing just three minutes in Saturday's loss to East Carolina due to an
injury, Hawkins bounced back in Sunday's game and led the Lady Hornets with 16
points on 8-of-14 shooting.
Harmon,
who scored six of DSU's first 10 points, finished the game with 14 points and
was named to the All-Tournament team for her play this weekend.
Del
State also received 11 points each from Bristow and freshman Keyanna Tate (Beltsville, Md.). Tate led the team with nine rebounds.
Robert
Morris' Spanou and Hartwell each tallied a game-high 20 points while Briannica
Tye added in 12 for the Colonials.
Joining
Harmon on the All-Tournament team were RMU's Spanou and Hartwell in addition to
East Carolina's Chareya Smith (MVP) and Shala Hodges and Elon's Ali Ford.
The
Lady Hornets take a break from non-conference play as they travel to Princess
Anne, Md. on Saturday to take on the Lady Hawks from the University of Maryland
Eastern Shore at 2 p.m.
