SCHIEDER POSTS CAREER-HIGH 15 KILLS IN LOSS TO HU

DOVER, Del. - Freshman Theresa Schieder (Munich, Germany) had a career night Friday, but the results weren't as favorable as Hampton University defeated Delaware State, 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 14-25, 23-25), at Memorial Hall on Parents' Night.

Schieder collected a career-high 15 kills on a team season-high .652 attack percentage (15 kills, zero errors, 23 total attacks) in the four-set match.  She previously hit a .417 on Nov. 4 against Coppin State to lead the Hornets (4-20, 3-8 MEAC).  Seven of her 15 kills came in the first set, where she hit .778.

Del State took an early command in the match, taking a 10-4 lead off of three straight kills in the first set.  The Lady Pirates (12-12, 7-4 MEAC) fought back and came within one at 14-13 with a service ace from Sheileen Pagan.  An ace from Schieder gave the Hornets a 24-20 advantage but Hampton wouldn't go away easily as they took the next two points.  A kill from sophomore Jessica Croucher (Brisbane, Australia) closed out the set, 25-22, and gave DSU their lone victory of the evening.

The two teams battled it out in the second set, tying the score eight times.  A Schieder kill and bad set from HU's Lihi Elkayam tied things at 12-12 before the Lady Pirates broke away.  Hampton finished the set on a 13-6 run to take the 25-18 win.

The Hornets held a brief lead in the third set before the Lady Pirates took over, winning 25-14.  Mianna Armstrong posted six kills in the win.

Del State clawed their way back and threatened to send the match to five in the fourth set.  A kill from senior Elisa Herrmann (Andernach, Germany) and blocks from sophomore Brooke Redmon (Warrenton, Va.) and junior Bel Fakaosi (Salt Lake City, Utah) gave the Hornets a 14-11 lead, their largest of the set.  The Lady Pirates responded by taking their own lead before the two teams tied things at 22-22.  Hampton countered on a 3-1 run to take the set, 25-23, and match.

Krista Kraskura posted 21 kills for the Lady Pirates.  Armstrong and Sonja Maksimovic added in 17 and 10 of their own, respectively.

The Hornets wrap up their regular season on Sunday with a 3 p.m. matchup against Norfolk State.  Delaware State will honor seniors Sonja Banicevic, Jessica Barnes, Elisa Herrmann and Megan McDonald in their last home game as a Hornet.
