Princess Anne, Md. (Apr. 14, 2010) --- The Delaware State softball team has reached the 20-win mark for the 10th straight season after a doubleheader sweep of Maryland-Eastern Shore at Hawk Field today. The Hornets won the first game 9-1 and took the nightcap 13-0. Each game was called after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Delaware State has won its last five games to improve to 20-12 on the season.
In the opener, JoJo Shields was 2-for-2 with two runs batted in, while Casey Beighly and Brittany Ruark combined to toss a two-hitter.
Shields put DSU on the board first with a two-run double in the top of the second inning. UMES scored a run in the bottom of the second to cut the Hornets' lead to 2-1.
Delaware State blew the game open with seven runs in the fourth inning. Beighly and Janelle Lukens had run-scoring doubles, while Jordan Reid and Chelsea Stern also knocked in runs in the inning.
Beighly (7-3) allowed three hits and one run in four innings to earn the win. Ruark retired all three batters she faced, one by strikeout, in an inning of work.
In the nightcap, Lukens drove in four runs and Shields two to lead DSU's 17-hit attack.
Delaware State opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by Shields' two-run double.
The Hornets added six runs in the second to open up a 10-0 lead. Stern tripled in a run, while Rachel Carroll had a run-scoring double in the inning.
Delaware State capped off the scoring with three in the third, with Skye Boris (double), Jessica Langley (single) and Lukens (singles) driving in the runs.
Amber Coburn (6-3) allowed two hits in three shutout innings. Ruark pitched two hitless innings of relief.
The Hornets return to action with a double header at Coppin State on Saturday (Apr. 17).
