Charlottesville, Va. (Mar. 6, 2010) --- The Delaware State softball team overcame six-run and five-run deficits en route to a 15-7 win over Columbia in Charlottesville, Va., today. The Hornets fell to the Virginia Cavaliers 7-0 later in the day.
In the Columbia contest, Delaware State surrendered six runs in the top of the first inning. The Lions added a run in the second to take a 7-2 lead.
The Hornets began their comeback in the bottom of the first. Allison Rubin reached base on an error to lead off the inning, and later scored on another Columbia error. Casey Beighly had a run-scoring single in the inning.
Delaware State trailed 7-2 before exploding for seven runs in the bottom of the third. The big blows in the inning were a two-run double by Tawney Reeger, and a single by Andrea Waters which scored two more.
The Hornets added five runs in the fifth to open up a 14-7 lead. Breanne Parr's three-run homer was the highlight of the inning. Beighly also doubled in her second run of the game.
Parr was 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Waters was 3-for-5 with three RBI. Reeger and Beighly drove in two runs each.
Beighly (2-0) pitched 5.2 innings of one-run relief to earn the win for the Hornets.
In the Virginia contest, Melanie Mitchell allowed just one hit and struck out 13 Hornets to earn the win.
Jordan Reid's fourth inning single was the only hit for Delaware State.
The Hornets (5-1) will face Columbia and Virginia again on Sunday in Charlottesville, Va.
