Cary, N.C. (Feb. 28, 2010) --- The Delaware State softball team completed a four-game sweep in the season-opening North Carolina Central Tournament with victories over South Carolina State and Barton College in its final two games.
The Hornets defeated South Carolina State 17-3 on Saturday, then handed Barton a 17-5 loss on Sunday.
In the South Carolina State contest, Tawney Reeger was 4-of-4 with six runs batted in, while Andrea Waters had two hits and three RBI. Jordan Reid was 3-for-3 with four runs scored for the Hornets.
Delaware State started the game with a bang, scoring nine runs in the top of the first inning. Reeger had a two-run double and run-scoring single in the inning. Water singled in two runs and Casey Beighly knocked in another with a single in the inning.
Reeger and Waters also had RBI hits in the Hornets' three-run third inning.
Delaware State added four runs in the fourth, highlighted by Reeger's two-run single.
In Sunday's win over Barton, Janelle Lukens was 5-for-5 with three runs batted in, while Waters and Beighly had home runs to lead the Hornets' 21-hit attack. Beighly drove in five runs in the contest, while Rachel Carroll and Bre Parr had three hits each.
Delaware State was ahead 10-5 before blowing the game open with seven runs in the top of the seventh.
Waters had a two-run homer in the DSU's three-run sixth inning, while Beighly highlighted the seventh with a three-run shot.
DSU combined to score 58 runs in its four tournament wins.
The Hornets will return to action next weekend at the University of Virginia.
