Dover, Del. (Jan. 9, 2010) ---
Selena Galloway's 14 points would lead the way offensively, but it was the team defense of Delaware State that would make the difference as the Lady Hornets defeated the Winston-Salem State Rams 57-39 on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.
Four different Hornets would notch at least eight points, and 10 different red and blue players saw at least double digit minutes on the day. Freshman forward Kianna D'Oliveira's layup at 18:05 of the first half gave the Hornets the 2-0 lead, one they would never relinquish throughout the contest.
The opening half saw eight different Hornets tally points, including six from D'Oliveira on 3-4 shooting. Cortney Crockett's layup, steal, and coast-to-coast layup on the other end extended the Hornet lead to 18-7 with 9:36 remaining. The MEAC's #1 team defensively showed their prowess in front of their own goal again, outrebounding the Lady Rams 20-14, and forcing 13 turnovers while committing only six themselves. Winston-Salem would keep the game within range down 31-22 at the break behind a perfect first half from WSSU's Vontisha Woods, who was 3-3 from the floor and 4-4 from the charity stripe for 10 points.
The second half was more of the same from DSU, as Selena Galloway would lead the way from her two guard position with nine second half points that would be part of her 14 overall, leading all Hornets for the contest. Her starting backcourt mate, junior Cortney Crockett, would also find double digits with 10 points on 5-7 shooting on the day. But the difference would be the defense, as DSU would force 11 more turnovers to give the Rams 24 on the day, and the Lady Hornets would pick up 28 points off WSSU miscues, with the visitors only getting eight. DSU would also win the points in the paint battle 30-10, many of those on layups after forced turnovers.
The injury prone Hornets also saw the return of senior center Brittany Washington after missing six games, who notched three of DSU's 13 steals in addition to four points and three rebounds in 17 minutes of action.
DSU is back in action at Memorial Hall on Monday night when they take on the South Carolina State Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m. Live stats and post-game reaction will be available on DSUHornets.com.
