DOVER, Del. (September 27th) –
Delaware State Soccer showed improvement in possession and overall play in their
match today, but were unable to find the back of the net as the Navy Midshipmen
defeated the Hornets 2-0 on Sunday at Alumni Stadium.
Navy held most of the possession early, but
were unable to unlock the Hornets organization and commitment to defense. But Midshipmen left wing Brittany Fruin
recorded the first tally in the 23rd minute. She used a pretty piece of skill near the
by-line to shed a defender, and with her cutback had a large target to put it
past keeper Brittany Curtis. Off her
right foot she fired it upper 90 for the opener.
DSU continued to play well as a collective unit,
but were unable to find enough of the ball in the attacking third. The visitors added an insurance score in the 77th
when a ball that was batted around couldn't be held by Curtis, and Annie
Kendzior was unabated to the Hornet goal with the ball at her feet.
“Today was a great day for Delaware State
Soccer,” said head coach Nitan Soni. “We
made significant progress as a team today, and we've really come far in a short
period of time. We need to keep this
momentum going.”
Curtis stopped 12 Navy shots, including eight
in the second half.
The Hornets take to the pitch again on
Wednesday against American University at 4 p.m. in Washington, D.C. For more information on Hornet soccer, be
