Ormond Beach, Fla. (May 8, 2009) ? The Delaware State Softball Team was held to one run on two hits and fell 7-1 to the Hampton Pirates today, May 8, in Ormond Beach, Fla. The loss eliminated the Hornets from the 2009 MEAC Tournament.
Hampton got the offensive started in the second inning scoring two runs on four hits including a Travonna Byrd single which scored two.
The Pirates tacked on two more runs in the third inning when Amanda Black singled to give Hampton the commanding 4-0 lead.
Black held the Hornets hitless until the fourth inning when senior Megan Lambertz singled up the middle scoring freshman Tawny Reeger.
Black went the entire way for the Pirates, allowing just the two hits while striking out three DSU batters.
Lambertz got the loss in the circle for the Hornets, allowing four runs in just two innings of work.
Thirteen of the 14 current players on the DSU roster are eligible to return to the team next season. With the loss, DSU finishes the 2009 season with a 23-24 record.
The Hornets earned three All-MEAC honors this season with Andrea Waters earning first-team honors, and Brittney Ruark and JoJo Shields earned second-team honors.
