College Park, Md. (April 29, 2009) ? After dropping two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference games the day before, the Delaware State Hornets (21-20) couldn't get back momentum as they dropped two non-conference games to the Maryland Terrapins (29-23) today, in College Park, Md. Maryland outscored the Hornets 16-1 in the sweep.
In the opener, sophomore Andrea Waters and the rest of the Hornets got out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning to keep the game knotted at zero.
The Terrapins got another chance in the second inning and this time capitalized, scoring two runs on a homerun to take a 2-0 lead.
Maryland continued to tack on runs scoring in each of the next four innings while the Delaware State defense aided the Terrapins by committing three costly errors.
The Hornets tallied just two hits in the loss compared to eight by Maryland.
Waters picked up the loss allowing eight hits and four earned runs in five innings. She also tallied one of the two hits for Delaware State.
In Game Two, DSU starter Megan Lambertz held the Terrapins in check until the fourth inning when she allowed four runs on three hits. They added two more in the fifth inning and one in the sixth inning to take the game 7-0.
The senior hurler went the entire way allowing seven runs on 10 hits.
The DSU offense managed five hits in the game but stranded seven runners.
The Hornets will make up the third MEAC game against Howard tomorrow, April 30, at the Hornets Nest. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Howard will play as the home team.
