DOVER (April 19, 2009) ? Due to another stellar day at the plate from sophomore Andrea Waters, two homeruns from freshman Rachel Carroll, and 13 Coppin State errors, the Delaware State Softball Team (19-15, 5-1 MEAC) swept the Eagles in a doubleheader today, at the Hornets Nest.
DSU wasted no time in getting on the board in Game One as Waters homered to leadoff the game. The Hornets scored two more runs in the inning to give themselves the 3-0 lead.
After a scoreless bottom of the first inning, the Hornets picked up where they left off, scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
Delaware State kept hitting in the third inning, scoring five more runs to take a 12-0 lead.
Coppin State scored two runs in the fifth and final inning but the 12-run deficit was too much for the Eagles to handle as they fell 12-2.
DSU starting pitcher Brittney Ruark picked up her 11th win of the season, throwing four scoreless innings and striking out five batters.
In Game Two, the Hornets had a tough time getting the bats going as CSU scored two runs in the first inning to take a lead for the first time in the day.
The Hornet' bats wouldn't stay quiet for long as they scored 11 runs in the final four innings to secure the 11-3 victory. Carroll drove in six of those runs.
Casey Beighly entered in relief for DSU after Ruark lasted just one inning on the mound. The Freshman threw the final six innings, allowing just one run.
Waters tallied three more hits in the second game and improved her average from .275 before games on Friday to a team-leading .364 after Sunday's games.
The Hornets will be back in action on Tuesday, April 21, when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa., to take on La Salle for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
