DOVER (April 17, 2009) ? In addition to never getting the bats going today, pitching for DSU didn't help the team either as the Delaware State Softball Team (15-15) was swept by the Temple Owls (11-21) in a doubleheader today, at the Hornets Nest.
Game One began as a pitchers duel as aces from both teams (Katie Burdeaux and Brittney Ruark) started strong. But, after a 25-minute game delay due to injury, Ruark struggled, allowing seven Temple runs in the sixth inning. The Owls added two more in the seventh to take the first game 9-0.
Ruark, in her eighth-consecutive start, allowed four earned runs in 5.1 innings while striking out three batters.
The Hornet offense only mustered four hits, two coming off of the bat of Andrea Waters.
In Game Two, Waters made just her second start on the mound for the Hornets this season and was lit up, pitching just 1/3 of an inning and allowing five earned runs.
The Owls scored one more run in the second inning and two more in the fifth to take a commanding 8-0 lead.
DSU battled late, scoring two runs in the fifth, but it came too late as the Owls were able to hold the Hornets scoreless in the final two innings to secure the 8-2 victory.
Freshman Casey Beighly got the loss in relief, throwing 6.2 innings and allowing three runs.
Waters again led the way offensively for the Hornets, tallying two hits and an RBI.
The Hornets will host another doubleheader tomorrow, April 18, against Winston-Salem State. First pitch is set for noon.
