Norfolk, Va. (March 7, 2009) ? Pitching played a big role in both of DSU's games today as they beat Binghamton 7-3, but fell to Colgate 10-2 on the first day of the Spartan Clash. With the 1-1 showing, the Hornets are now 5-3 on the season.
In game one, strong pitching and a solid offensive lineup allowed the Hornets to halt their two-game losing streak against the Bearcats. The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when Tawny Reeger, making her first collegiate appearance singled to drive in Rachel Carroll to give DSU the 1-0 lead.
Binghamton tied the game in the seventh only to see the Hornets score five runs in the eighth to secure the victory.
Pitcher Brittney Ruark pitched the entire game, allowing no earned runs and striking out nine batters. Megan Lambertz led the way offensively with two hits and two RBI. She leads the team with nine RBI this season.
Against the Raiders, pitchers Casey Beighly and Breanne Parr, making her first collegiate appearance, allowed a combined 10 runs in four innings that the Hornets wouldn't come back from.
Beighly was indirectly responsible for both of Delaware State's runs as they both came as a result of her plate appearances (one off of a dropped fly ball and one on a fielding error).
Tomorrow, the Hornets will face host, Norfolk State at 9 a.m. and then will either play in the consolation (1 p.m.) or championship game (3 p.m.) depending on their overall record during the tournament.
