DOVER (March 25, 2009) ? In the eighth straight season these two teams have met, it was once again Delaware that was victorious. The Blue Hens took both games of a double-header on Wednesday, March 25, at the Hornets Nest. With the losses, the Hornets drop to 10-11 this season, while the Blue Hens improve to 7-10 (1-2 in CAA) on the year.
In the second inning of the opener, the Hornets struck first as freshman Bre Parr singled in Megan Lambertz to take the 1-0 lead. Tawny Reeger came to the plate next to single in Parr for a 2-0 DSU lead.
The Blue Hen' bats didn't stay quiet for long as they scored three runs on two hits in the third inning to take a 3-2 lead. UD tacked on one more run in the fourth.
DSU Sophomore Andrea Waters hit her second homerun of the season in the fourth inning, tying her for the team lead, but Delaware added three runs in the fifth inning to cement the 7-3 win.
Starting pitcher Brittney Ruark received the loss for the Hornets, her fourth of the year, going 4.1 innings and allowing six runs.
Offensively, Parr led the way going 3-for-4 with the RBI single in the first. She is now second on the team with a .356 batting average.
In game two, The Hornets got behind early as UD scored eight runs on seven hits in the second inning to help earn a 10-1 victory in five innings.
Freshman Casey Beighly added the lone run for DSU in bottom half when she singled to score Reeger. The first year starter now leads the team with a .365 batting average.
Starting pitcher Megan Lambertz went 1.2 innings, allowing eight earned runs on seven hits for her fourth loss of the season.
DSU starts MEAC play this Saturday, March 28, at Howard. The Hornets will play a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday then the teams will play a single game on Sunday starting at noon.
