HORNETS FALL IN EXTRA INNINGS TO VERMONT IN FINALE

DOVER (March 21, 2009) ? Brittney Ruark threw a complete-game three-hitter, but allowed the winning run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning to give Vermont the 2-1 victory in the finale of a three-game set today, at the Hornets Nest. With their first home loss of the season, the Hornets fall to 10-9.

There was no score until the fifth inning when the Catamounts scored on a single to take the 1-0 lead. The Hornets returned the favor in the fifth when Casey Beighly singled to the third baseman to score Bre Parr to tie the game at one.

The game went to extra innings when the Catamounts scored to take the 2-1 lead. JoJo Shields singled for DSU in the bottom of the inning but Parr held at third base on the play. Beighly and Andrea Waters popped out to end the game.

Ruark put the Hornets in position to win, striking out seven batters and allowed only one walk. Her ERA remains strong at 1.20 in 10 appearances.

Freshman Jordan Reid had the first two-hit game of her career to lead the Hornets offensively.

The Hornets will remain at home, this Wednesday, March 25, when they host in-state rival Delaware for a double-header starting at 2:30 p.m.
