DOVER (March 15, 2009) ? The DSU Softball Team never got it going at the plate for the second straight day and fell to both Drexel (10-2, five innings) and Central Connecticut State (3-2) to finish last in the Capital Classic Tournament today.
Drexel wasted little time in the first game mounting a lead, scoring five runs and four hits in the second inning.
The Hornets cut the lead to three in the fourth inning scoring two runs on two hits. However, the Dragons tacked onto their lead adding five more runs in the bottom of the inning to capture the 13-2 victory.
Starting pitcher Casey Beighly recorded the loss, allowing five earned runs in just two innings of work.
The Hornets only recorded three hits in the contest coming off of the bats of Breanne Parr, Shields and Lambertz.
In the consolation game against CSSU, the game remained knotted at zero until the fourth inning when scored on a Katrina Knowles single. They added two more runs in the fifth.
DSU finally got on the board in the sixth when Shields doubled to left scoring Parr. Shields now leads the team with a .405 batting average. Tawny Reeger cut the lead to one in the seventh with DSU's first homerun of the tournament and Reeger's first of the season, however, it wasn't enough as Parr grounded out to third base to end the rally and the game.
The Hornets are off until Saturday, March 21, when they return home to face Vermont for a double-header starting at 1 p.m. The two teams will then play a single game on Sunday at noon.
