DOVER (March 14, 2009) ? The Delaware State Softball Team fell to both Central Connecticut State (3-2) and St. Francis (PA) (13-0 in five innings) on the first day of the Capital Classic held at the Hornets Nest. With the losses, the Hornets fall to 8-6 on the season.
Against the Blue Devils, DSU took the early 1-0 lead off of a Megan Lambertz double that scored Tawny Reeger.
The game remained 1-0 until the fifth inning when CCSU scored three runs on three hits to take the 3-1 lead.
Freshman Rachel Carroll tried to mount a comeback with an RBI double in the sixth inning cutting the lead to one, but the Blue Devils closed out the game in the seventh to take the win.
Lambertz led DSU offensively in the contest, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. She now has 15 RBI in 15 games.
Starting pitcher Brittney Ruark recorded her first loss of the season, throwing 4.2 innings and allowing all three CCSU runs.
In game two against the Red Flash, the Hornets never got it going offensively only registering four hits in the game.
St. Francis poured it on, scoring five runs in the second inning and four runs in the fifth to give in route to the 13-0 victory and a 2-0 record for the day.
Lambertz got the loss on the mound, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing four earned runs.
The Hornets will look to bounce back tomorrow against Drexel at 11 a.m. They will then either play in the consolation game at 1 p.m. or the championship game at 3 p.m.
