DOVER (March 11, 2009) ? The DSU softball team outscored North Carolina Central 20-4 in 10 innings in route to their double-header sweep today at the Hornets Nest. With the victories, the Hornets improve to 8-4 on the season.
In the opener, DSU struck first in the second inning scoring on a JoJo Shields single, and a passed ball scoring Rachel Carroll to take the early 2-0 lead.
They added to that lead in the following inning when Andrea Waters singled, scoring two runs and Carroll stole home widening the DSU lead to 5-0.
The Hornets scored four more runs in the fifth and final inning to end the game with a score of 10-2.
Waters got the win on the mound, throwing the complete game while allowing only two hits and striking out three batters. She also led the team offensively with those two RBI.
In game two, the Eagles took the early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning.
The lead didn't hold long as the Hornets tied the game in the following inning on a Waters triple followed by her scoring on an error the very next play.
DSU tacked on two runs in the third inning and three more in the fifth and final inning to seal another 10-2 win.
Casey Beighly picked up her second win of the season on the mound as she threw the complete game, allowing only one earned run and striking out four batters. Megan Lambertz led the Hornets at the plate going 3-for-3 with three RBI. She continues to lead the team with 14 RBI on the season.
This Saturday and Sunday, Delaware State will host the Capital Classic Tournament featuring Central Connecticut State, Drexel, and St. Francis (PA). The Hornets will first be in action against CCSU on Saturday, at 10:30 a.m.
