DSU OUTSCORES NCCU 23-0 IN SEASON-OPENING DOUBLE-HEADER

Carey, N.C. (February 13, 2009) ? The Hornets started out their 2009 season in strong fashion as they outscored North Carolina Central 23-0 in a double-header today, the most runs they have ever scored in a double-header against the Eagles.

In game one, freshman Rachel Carroll, in her first collegiate game, showed no signs of nerves as she drove in three runs to lead DSU to a 14-0 victory. Starting pitcher Brittney Ruark tossed a complete game shutout while striking out six Eagles. Sophomore Andrea Waters also added to the offensive momentum as she also drove in three runs on a double in a fourth inning that saw the Hornets score seven runs.

In the second game, freshman Casey Beighly was dominant at the plate and on the mound to drive the Hornets to the 9-0 win and the sweep of the double-header. She drove in three runs on three hits at the plate and tossed a complete game shutout with six strikeouts on the mound. Junior JoJo Shields also drove in three runs with two of them coming off of a double in a second inning in which DSU scored five runs.

For NCCU, Sophia Blue led the offense by going a combined 3-for-5 in the two games.

These two teams will meet again tomorrow for a third and final game at noon.
