HORNETS DOWN WILMINGTON, 60-44

DOVER, Del. (November 16, 2009) --- Three Hornets scored in double figures including Marcus Neal, who registered a career-high 19 points, as Delaware State improved to 2-0 with a 60-44 win over Wilmington University (0-1) on Monday, Nov. 16 at Memorial Hall.

"We have so many young kids, and they don't understand what we're trying to do," said Head Coach Greg Jackson. "All of them are lost on the defensive end.  We had to make some adjustments at halftime to get some kids on the floor that really understand what we're doing.  We ended up going to a four guard offense and that caused them some problems."

Delaware State finished the contest shooting 32.8 percent from the floor (15-of-58) and 28.6 percent from 3-point land (4-of-14). The Hornets went to the free-throw line 21 times converting 85.7 percent of their attempts. Wilmington shot 41.9 percent form the field (18-of-43) and was 6-of-11 from the free-throw line.

"I'll tell anybody, just because this team is in Division II, they still have some talent on this team," said Jackson.  "These guys can play.  And we had to come out with some defensive intensity to limit possessions and limit their shots to get us going."

Neal shot 6-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-8 from bond the arc to lead all scorers.

"I thought Marcus got us going in the second half," said Jackson. "We had him concentrate on just going out and being a spot shooter, and he did some of those things tonight for us."

Frisco Sandidge recorded 13 points, including 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Sandidge tallied his first double-double of the season grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. Freshman Alibaba Odd scored in double figures for the second-straight game, pouring in 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor.  Point guard Jay Threatt had nine points, nine steals and four assists in the contest.

Delaware forced 26 turnovers resulting in 23 points. The Hornets registered 15 steals - led by Threatt's nine.

Wilmington was led by Brandon Savage, who scored 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Savage also led the Wildcats with eight rebounds.

A 6-0 run midway through the first half by DSU, tied the game at 17-all. DSU took a two-pointer by Greg Smith gave the Hornets their first lead of the game, one they would never relinquish.

Delaware State went on a 16-5 run to end the first half, leading 28-22.  Each team shot below 40 percent in the first half as Wilmington went 9-of-24 from the floor (37.5 percent) and DSU converted just 29.0 percent (9-of-31) of its shots. Sandidge led all players with a game-high eight points in the first half. Savage led Wilmington with five points in the first 20 minutes.

A pair of 3-pointers by Neal, to start the second half, gave the Hornets their first double-digit lead of the game, 34-24. The treys were the first of the game for Delaware State (0-of-5 from beyond the arch in the first half).

The Hornets will host the Maine Black Bears on Wednesday, Nov. 18. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
