DOVER Del. (Oct 2nd) - The DSU Hornets picked up their first goal of the season during the run of play today, but it wasn't enough as four second half tallies by the UMBC Retrievers were the difference as the Hornets fell 4-1 at Alumni Stadium on Friday night.
DSU (1-9) would get on the board first when Theresa Wappett took a free kick just inside the by line left of the Retriever goal in the 26th minute. Her cross found the head of La Toya Lesane, who flicked it past keeper Mo Van Vierah to give the Hornets the early advantage, one they would hold through halftime.
However the Retrievers would draw even on an unassisted rocket shot from Elyse Billardo in the 54th minute that beat keeper Brittany Curtis to her right from 25 yards away. The advantage would double just one minute later as Aly Gazarek was the recipient of a skilled cross from the left flank by Danielle Kell. UMBC (1-8-1) would salt away the victory in the 79th minute Megan McDonald caught Curtis off her line, and chipped a perfect lob from 35 yards away. Kell went from provider to scorer in the 88th, banging away a rebound inside the box that couldn't be corralled by substitute Hornet goalie Courtney Haas.
With nine players going 90 minutes for the Hornets, depth became an issue, as the Hornets allowed only eight shots in the first half but conceded 15 in the second stanza. DSU was only able to put two shots on frame for the match, compared to 12 for the visitors.
The Hornets return to Great West Conference play on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Alumni Stadium when they take on the South Carolina State Bulldogs. Live stats for the match will be available via DSUHornets.com.
