PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (August 14, 2008) ? The fifth day of the Hornets trip to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago saw Delaware State take part in its second competition of the T&T Hoops Classic. The Hornets defeated the Maloney All-Stars, 100-71. But, before the team took the court, they went through an Academic Enrichment Session as well as a shoot-around.
To start the day, the Hornets participated in an Academic Enrichment Session, in which the team discussed Global Society topics such as "The Caribbean in a Global Context: Colonial History" and "Capitalism and Slavery through the analysis of the First Prime Minister of Trinidad, Dr. Eric Williams". The Academic Enrichment Sessions are designed to develop each student-athlete's awareness of international issues. They will learn concepts like cultural relativity, national sovereignty and globalization and economic development.
Later that afternoon, DSU traveled to the St. Paul Street Complex - site of the team's first youth camp earlier this week. There they went through an hour-long shoot-around in preparation for this evening's game.
The Hornets traveled east to the town of Maloney to take on their second team during the foreign tour on Thursday evening. Led by Marcus Neal's 23 points, Delaware State downed the Maloney All-Stars, 100-71. Outscoring its opponent 28-14 in each of the first two quarters, DSU went on a 17-3 run to close out the first half of action, 56-28. Maintaining nearly a 30-point lead for most of the second half, the Hornets also got a strong performance from Frisco Sandidge, who had 17 points, eight rebounds, one assist and one steal.
"I thought we played pretty well tonight," said Assistant Coach Jarrell Wilkerson, who was filling in for Head Coach Greg Jackson. Jackson missed the game due to illness. "I thought the team was well prepared for the transition game as well as the type of man-to-man defense that we play. I thought we moved the ball pretty well. I thought this team we played was a little more athletic than the one we played on Tuesday. I was impressed with this team. They shot the ball well from the outside."
"Our head coach was out sick and he pretty wanted me to be an extension of him," said Neal. "That meant leading the team any way that I had to. It's not my job to be the leading scorer of the team's leading defender but, it's my job just to give my best. We started off pretty slow and I knew that I needed to be a little more aggressive and score a couple of points. As far as the team's performance, we handled the adversity of things not going our way at first. We stayed strong and we stayed together."
"This trip has been a great experience," said Sandidge. "We all get together and discuss all the things that we have been experiencing as Americans coming to a different country. We have been given the opportunity to come over here and see a different way of life. It's really given me a better perspective on life. As for the game, tonight, we played well as a team. We pushed the ball up and down the court. We didn't defend as well in the second half as we did in the first. I believe we were a little tired. Overall we had a pretty good performance."
