Hampton (April 27, 2008) --- Evelyn Garcia hit two grand slams to lead Hampton to an 11-2 win over Delaware State in a MEAC softball contest this afternoon. The first place Pirates (26-15; 9-2) won two of three in the weekend series to open up a 1? game lead over the Hornets (23-22; 8-4) in the MEAC North race. Garcia was 3-for-4 with eight RBI. Her second slam gave Hampton a nine-run lead in the bottom of the sixth, ending the game due to the eight-run rule. Delaware State opened the scoring when Aisha Holloman drew a bases loaded walk to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Hampton struck back in the bottom of the third. The Pirates made it a 1-1 game when Delaware State starter Megan Lambertz forced in a run when she hit Angela Balser with a pitch with the bases loaded. Garcia followed with her first grand slam to give Hampton a 5-1 lead. The Pirates tacked on a run in the fourth to open up a 6-1 lead. Delaware State got a run back when pinch runner Allison Rubin scored on a ground out by Holloman with two outs in the top of the sixth. The Hornets were outhit 11-4 in the contest. Delaware State will close out the regular season at home against Morgan State next weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday (May 3) and single game on Sunday (May 4).
