HORNETS SPLIT AT SPARTAN CLASH

Norfolk, VA --- The Delaware State softball team was 1-1 on the opening day of the Spartan Clash at Norfolk State University on Saturday. The Hornets opened the tourney with a 20-1 win over Coppin State before falling to Hartford 9-0 in their second contest. In the opener, Delaware State pounded out a season high18 hits. Andrea Waters drove in six runs, while Sha Tabor and Jessica Chrabaszcz knocked in four each. Waters was 3-for-3 at the plate. She also pitched a one-hit complete game, striking out nine, to earn the win. Tabor and Chrabaszcz each had three hits in four at bats. The Hornets led 4-0 before tacking on five runs in the third. Waters drove in three in the inning, while Chrabaszcz also had a run-scoring hit. DSU added three in the fourth to take a 12-1 lead. Chrabaszcz, Waters and Kendra Goss each drove in a run in the inning. The Hornets put eight more on the board in the fifth, highlighted by Chrabaszcz's two-run homer. Delaware State had just three hits in the loss to Hartford. The game was scoreless when Hartford's Lauren Kamena smacked a solo homer in the top of the fourth. The Hawks scored eight runs in the fifth to put the game away. Sara Messinger's grand slam was the big blow in the inning. Waters had two of Delaware State's three hits in the contest. The Hornets will play two in the Spartans Clash on Sunday, beginning with Norfolk State at 9:00 a.m.
