Dover, DE ? It was definitely a game that lived up to the hype as the Norfolk State Spartans broke a nine game losing streak to the Delaware State Hornets 65-63. The loss snapped a two game win streak for the Hornets, dropping them to 10-13 and 7-4 in the MEAC, while the Spartans moved into a first place tie in the conference race at 9-2 and 13-10 over-all.
The game was a back and forth battle all the way, with six ties and eight lead changes, but the Hornets managed to take a 34-30 lead into the locker room at the half. The biggest lead by either team was in the first half when the DSU held a six point advantage 18-12 on a three pointer by Roy Bright at the 8:57 mark.
The Spartans turned up the intensity in the second half and shot 69.6% (16-23) from the floor and made the biggest lead change with 4:19 left on a jumper by Corey Lyons that put them up by one 61-60. A layup by Michael Deloach increased the NSU lead to three with 3:43 left, but DSU's Bright tied the game at 63 on a three pointer with 3:19 left.
NSU's Larry Vickers scored the go ahead basket on a short jumper with 2:31 left for the lead 65-63, despite several opportunities the Hornets had to either tie or go up by one in the final minute of the game. Included in the missed shots were a layup by Trevor Welcher and a jumper by Marcus Neal that would have tied the game and a missed three pointer by Bright with three seconds for the win.
Bright led all scorers with 29, including seven of 14 shooting from behind the arc. Donald Johnson also finished with double digits for the Hornets with 11 points.
The Spartans finished with three in double figures, led by Lyons with15 points and Tony Murphy and Deloach had 13 each.
The Hornets will conclude their final MEAC road swing Monday, when they travel to Greensboro, NC, to face the Aggies of N.C. A&T at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised live nationally on ESPNU.
