Daytona Beach, FL ? A second half comeback led by seniors Roy Bright and Joe Dickens helped the Delaware State Hornets to a 69-66 overtime win over the Bethune Cookman Wildcats. Bright and Dickens scored a combined 28 points in the second half to help the Hornets overcome a 28-14 Wildcat halftime lead.
The win improved the Hornets to 4-1 in the MEAC (7-10 over-all), while the Wildcats dropped to 2-4 in the MEAC (7-12 overall).
It was all BCU in the first half as they shot 50% (9-18) from the floor and 100% from the charity stripe, while the Hornets struggle connecting on only five of 20 (25%) from the floor and three of four (75%) from the line. Also, Hornets leading scorer Bright was held scoreless in the first half.
In regulations time, the Hornets outscored the Wildcats 41-27 in the second half and it was Bright's jumper with 13 seconds left in the game that sent it into overtime. The Hornets never led in regulation and took their first lead of the contest with 3:33 left in overtime 58-57 on a jumper by Donald Johnson. A three point play by BCU's Jimmy Hudson with three minutes left changed the lead back to 60-58. Dicken's two free throws at the 2:36 mark and a three pointer by Johnson with 1:49 left gave the Hornets the lead for good.
The Hornets finished with three in double figures paced by Bright with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Dickens and Johnson added 16 each. DSU also won the rebound battle 35-31.
Pacing the Wildcats was Jimmy Hudson who led all scorers with 21 points, while John Holmes finished with a double-double, 17 points and a game high 11 rebounds. Dewayne Pettus also added 15 points for BCU.
The Hornets will return to action on Monday evening when they complete their Florida swing in Tallahassee against conference rival Florida A&M at 7:30 p.m.
