NC ? The game didn't count in the MEAC conference run, but it was an important
match-up and the Delaware State Hornets improved to 5-9 on the season with a
66-59 win over Winston Salem State Rams.
The Rams (6-8) who are not eligible for MEAC championship play this
season, are playing their first full conference schedule.
The Hornets shot a season high 56.5% from the floor in the
first half, including 60% (6-10) from behind the arc and took a 36-30 lead into
the locker room. Pre-season MEAC Player
of the Year Roy Bright led all scorers early with 17, connecting on three of
five shots from downtown Winston Salem.
Bright finished with a game high 24 points.
The Hornets shot 46.7% from the floor for the game, and the
Rams shot 47.2%. The edge came from
behind the arc, as the Hornets connected on 47.4% (9-19), while the Rams shot
31.8% (7-22). The Hornets also shot
88.2% (15-17) from the free throw line, going 8-8 in the last 1:25 of the game.
Also in double figures for the Hornets was Donald Johnson
with 16 and Marcus Neal with 13 points.
Johnson and Neal also finished with a team high six rebounds each.
The Rams also had three in double digits with Darrell Wonge
finishing 18, Jamal Durham 14 and Brian Fisher adding 10.
The Hornets will be at home for the first time since November,
when they host the Spartans of Norfolk State, Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
