ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Delaware State University women's tennis had a strong showing at the Bill and Sandra Moore Invitational at the U.S. Naval Academy, bringing home two flight championships and earning several impressive victories throughout the weekend, September 18-20.
The Hornets captured both a singles and doubles title, with sophomore Kayla Wright winning the E Flight Singles Championship and freshmen Celia Torrelles Aguila and sophomore Maite Bou Safont claiming the C Flight Doubles Championship.
Wright put together a dominant weekend in singles, defeating opponents from the University of Mary Washington, Lehigh University and the U.S. Naval Academy on her way to the championship. Wright opened with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 victory over Emily Tharpe of Mary Washington before defeating Lehigh's Audrey Harrington 6-4, 6-2. She then advanced to the championship match with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Navy's Ji Woo Oh.
Torrelles Aguila and Bou Safont were equally impressive in doubles. The duo earned three consecutive 7-5 victories against teams from Mary Washington, Lehigh and George Mason to capture the C Flight Doubles Championship. The pair opened the tournament with a 7-5 win over Abiela Wang and Evelyn Snyder of Mary Washington before defeating Lehigh's Alice Ann Pantsari and Gabrielle David by the same score. In the championship match, Torrelles Aguila and Bou Safont completed their title run with a 7-5 victory over George Mason's Lakshya Motam and Rowan Scronce.
The tournament also featured several significant firsts for the Hornets.
Transfer junior Kamora Helton earned her first singles victory as a Hornet, defeating Navy's Manci Pal in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Helton also teamed up with freshman Ailyn Leon for Leon's first collegiate victory as a Hornet. The duo defeated George Mason's Maya Bayat and Gray Feaster 6-3.
Leon and Helton continued their run into the doubles final before falling to Navy's Mackenzie Lee and Peyton Amspacher-Philemon, 7-5.
Sophomore Audrey Yvana Mengue also posted an impressive singles victory, defeating Rita Taylor of Mary Washington 6-0, 6-1. Mengue was also part of a doubles victory alongside Alba Benedito, as the pair defeated Morgan State's Angelina Joao and Anissa Jean-Claude 6-1.
Benedito added a singles victory of her own, defeating Monmouth's Faith Sadgrove 6-0, 6-3.
The Hornets also saw freshman Celia Torrelles Aguila battle through a highly competitive singles match against Katherine Hung of the University of Maryland, ultimately falling 7-5, 4-6, 10-3 in a third-set match tiebreak.
Overall, Delaware State finished the weekend with one singles championship, one doubles championship and two Hornets competing in Singles Consolation finals, highlighting the team's depth and competitive performances across the tournament.
The Hornets will return to action next weekend at Towson University September 26-27, 2026.
