Hornets Shine with School Records, Gold Medals at MEAC Outdoor Championships

NORFOLK, Va. — The Delaware State women's track & field team concluded competition at the MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships with two MEAC titles, multiple podium finishes, and several additions to the program's all-time performance list during the three-day championship meet from May 14-16.

The Hornets were led by a historic performance from Rebecca Jansen, who captured the MEAC title in the 10,000m run with a time of 37:29.41. Jansen's performance moved her to No. 1 all-time in Delaware State history and finished just six seconds shy of the MEAC meet record.

Kirja Hickman also delivered a championship performance for the Hornets, winning the shot put with a school-record mark of 13.26m to move to No. 1 all-time in program history.

Delaware State saw several athletes secure podium finishes and all-time marks throughout the championship weekend.

Miriam Okwudibonye earned silver in the 400m hurdles after clocking a school-record 58.35 to move to No. 1 all-time at DSU.

In the jumps, Sanaa Virgil earned bronze in the triple jump with a school-record mark of 12.52m while also placing fourth in the long jump with a mark of 6.00m (19-9), moving to No. 2 all-time in program history.

Valerie Ashamu added a runner-up finish in the high jump after clearing 1.71m, while Aniyah Smith earned silver in the javelin with a throw of 38.09m.

The Hornets' 4x400m relay team of Okwudibonye, Annil McIntoshMorgan Wallace, and Kahlia Smith captured bronze after finishing in 3:46.60.

Delaware State's 4x100m relay squad of Leah PowellMariah Winfield, Smith, and Okwudibonye placed fifth overall in 45.85, setting a new school record and moving to No. 1 all-time at DSU.

Ilianna Surowiec earned bronze in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 12:49.55 to move to No. 3 all-time in school history.

Additional scoring performances included Gabrielle Almonte placing fourth in the javelin, Hickman placing fifth in both the discus and hammer throw, and Mariah Winfield finishing sixth in the 100m dash with a time of 11.77 to move to No. 2 all-time at DSU.

Smith also placed sixth in the 400m dash in 56.45 to move to No. 5 all-time, while Aniyah Smith and Cyenna Martinezadded top-eight finishes in the hammer throw with both athletes moving into the program's all-time top six rankings.
