VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Delaware State Hornets women's track & field team delivered a historic showing at the MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, highlighted by multiple school records, top-eight finishes, and national recognition on the HBCU stage.
Freshman Rebecca Jansen headlined the day with a statement performance in the 5,000 meters, crossing the line in 17:34.96 to secure the No. 1 HBCU time nationally while setting a new DSU school record. Jansen continued her dominant championship run in the 3,000 meters, posting a time of 10:18.01 to rewrite the DSU record books once again.
In the field events, Valerie Ashamu soared to new heights in the High Jump, clearing 1.72 meters to establish a DSU school record, further cementing her impact on the championship stage.
The Hornets placed a strong presence throughout the women's competition with several top-eight finishes. Ashamu added another standout effort in the High Jump, while Sanaa Virgil impressed in both the Long Jump and Triple Jump.
Mariah Winfield contributed points in the Long Jump, and Kirja Hickman displayed power in the throws with top finishes in both the Weight Throw and Shot Put, joined by Gabrielle Almonte in the Shot Put.
On the track, Miriam Okwudibonye delivered a strong showing in the 400 meters, while the Distance Medley Relay team of Mileah Cotton, Kahlia Smith, Merasia Johnson, and Jansen added valuable points for the Hornets.
The 4x400-meter relay squad of Okwudibonye, Johnson, Smith, and Marianah Lipkins closed out the meet with a solid performance to earn fourth place in the MEAC Champioships.
