BOSTON, Mass. — The Delaware State University women's track and field team opened the 2025–26 indoor season with a strong showing at the prestigious Harvard/HBCU Ivy League Challenge, held at Gordon Track on the campus of Harvard University.
Junior Sanaa Virgil, a two-time All-MEAC performer, led the way for the Hornets with a first-place finish in the triple jump, posting a winning mark of 11.61 meters. Virgil also added a runner-up finish in the long jump, giving Delaware State key momentum in the field events.
Sophomore Valerie Ashamu, the defending MEAC high jump champion, continued her consistency with a third-place finish in the high jump, while Merasia Johnson secured a fourth-place finish in the 600-meter run.
Delaware State's 4x400-meter relay team — consisting of Miriam Okwudibonye, Merasia Johnson, Marianah Lipkins, and Kahlia Smith — also placed fourth, highlighting the Hornets' depth on the track.
Additional top-eight finishes included Mariah Winfield, who placed fifth in the long jump, Kirja Hickman with a sixth-place finish in the shot put, and Cyenna Martinez, who earned seventh in the weight throw.
