Newark, DE — The Delaware State University Women's Track & Field team made a powerful statement this weekend, delivering a series of stellar performances at their meet in Newark. With a wave of first-place finishes, personal bests, and podium placements, the Hornets proved they are a force to be reckoned with as championship season approaches.
Leading the charge was Sierra Passee, who blazed through the 100m Hurdles to grab first place with a time of 14.45. Joining her atop the podium were Miriam Okwudibonye, taking gold in the 400m Dash (57.05); Valerie Ashamu, who soared to 1.65m (5.5") in the High Jump; and Kirja Hickman, who dominated the Shot Put with a powerful throw of 12.25m (40.3").
Sanaa Virgil continued to add to the Hornets success. She earned second place in the Long Jump; followed by a second place finish in the Triple Jump. Merasia Johnson took second place in the 400m Dash.
Malya Milstead earned 8th in the High Jump with a 1.50 meter mark. Followed by Joy Taiwo 2nd place performance in the 100m Hurdles to close out the meet for the Hornets.
The Hornets showed depth across the board with strong showings in every event group. From Layla James (5th in 800m) and Aniyah Smith (5th in Javelin) to Mariah Winfield (5th in Long Jump) and Ansolei Taliaferro (7th in 400H), the team's consistency and competitiveness were evident all day long.
