Women's Tennis to Begin MEAC Postseason Against Norfolk State Spartans

The Tournament Opens on Thursday, April 24

DOVER, Del. - Delaware State women's tennis will take on the Norfolk State University Spartans in the first round of the MEAC Tournament, as announced by the conference office on Sunday.

The Hornets-Spartans match, which is the #4 vs. #5 seed matchup, is scheduled for Thursday, April 24 at 8 a.m. North Carolina Central University will be the host.

The Hornets finished the 2024-25 season at 5-9 (2-4 MEAC). Their best stretch was a three-match winning streak in late March. They had victories over Coppin State, Wilmington, and Morgan State, the former two being 7-0 sweeps.

The Spartans concluded the regular season at 11-11 (3-3 MEAC). They come into this match with three straight losses.

Delaware State and Norfolk State faced one another a few weeks ago at the MEAC Round-Up on March 29. The Spartans won 5-2. Kit Yi Kaye Au-Yeung (2-6, 6-2, 6-2) and Camilla Mitolo (77-60, 63-77, 77-62) won their singles matches for the Hornets' two points.

Au-Yeung had a solid regular season, going 9-3 (4-2 MEAC) in singles and 9-5 (4-2 MEAC) in doubles. Mainly playing first and second singles, Au-Yeung, a Hong Kong, China native, was 5-1 in first and 4-2 in second. She won eight singles in a row from mid-February to late March. Au-Yeung and Lucia Casas Blas went 9-4 together in doubles (with each recording one loss with a different partner). The pair claimed six consecutive victories in March. Au-Yeung won MEAC Player of the Week on March 12.

Casas Blas shined in her first season at Delaware State. The Madrid, Spain native had a 9-4 (3-3 MEAC) singles record, mainly playing first or second singles, and was 9-5 (4-2 MEAC) in doubles. She was 4-3 in first singles and 5-1 in second. Similar to Au-Yeung, Casas Blas won eight straight singles matches from mid-February to late March. The two were paired for 13 of their 14 doubles appearances. Casas Blas won MEAC Player of the Week on March 26.

Mitolo has been a bright spot on the Hornets. A native of Molfetta, Italy, Mitolo concluded the regular season at 8-5 (5-1 MEAC) in singles, mainly in fourth or fifth, including a perfect 4-0 in the latter. She won six consecutive singles in March. Mitolo was 3-8 (2-4 MEAC) in doubles, usually paired with Eva Golembiovski.

The winner between Delaware State and Norfolk State will advance to face the top-seeded South Carolina State Bulldogs on Friday, April 25 at 9 a.m. The Lady Bulldogs have won the last five consecutive conference championships.
