WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ --The Delaware State Hornets took a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning, but could not hang on and fell 3-2 to the Monmouth Hawks Tuesday.
Senior Yurcaba (0-5) came out of the bullpen for Delaware State (10-20) and took the loss. Freshman Kristin White was a bright spot for the Hornets, starting the ballgame and throwing three scoreless innings, allowing one hit.
The Hornets put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the fifth inning. Delaware State got on the board thanks to sophomore Lester's RBI double with two outs.
The Hornets lost the lead they built in the fifth, but got back on the board in the seventh trailing 2-1. Freshman Santana came across to score the lone run of the inning for Delaware State, which brought the score level at 2-2. Monmouth then scored one time in the bottom half of the seventh to break the tie and grab the 3-2 win. Kayla Lester led the Hornets at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Monmouth was led offensively by senior Devin Coia, who went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Junior Billie Kerwood led the Hawks pitching staff, throwing seven innings of two-run ball.
