Delaware State Drops Doubleheader to North Carolina Central

GAME 1 | North Carolina Central 2, Delaware State 1

CARY, N.C. --Senior McKenzie Yurcaba gave up only two, but the Delaware State Hornets could not muster the offense to take advantage, losing to the North Carolina Central Eagles by the score of 2-1 on Saturday.

McKenzie Yurcaba (0-5) got the ball to start for Delaware State (13-25, 4-13) and took the loss. The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on eight hits, allowing one walk and striking out two.

The Hornets got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Senior Uxua Modrego put Delaware State on the board with a leadoff home run off freshman Xenna Tompkins. The Hornets were unable to hold the lead, as North Carolina Central scored two times over the remaining six innings to grab the 2-1 win. North Carolina Central was led offensively by senior Jaylah Barr, who went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Junior Jaden Davis led the Eagles pitching staff, throwing four scoreless innings.

GAME 2 | North Carolina Central 7, Delaware State 2

CARY, N.C. --The Delaware State Hornets struggled on Saturday, falling to the North Carolina Central Eagles by final score of 7-2.

Freshman Kristin White (0-5) took the loss in the circle for Delaware State (13-26, 4-14). Senior Mayanah Mclntosh started the ballgame and went three innings, surrendering one run on five hits, walking none and striking out two.

The Hornets were trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Delaware State got an RBI single from sophomore Emma Crowe, scoring sophomore Laila Hasan from third base.

The Eagles then scored six runs to retake their advantage heading into the seventh inning, when the Hornets responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. Delaware State pushed across a run on sophomore Kayla Lester's two-out RBI double, which tightened the Eagles lead to 7-2. The ballgame ended with that seventh inning rally falling short. North Carolina Central was led offensively by senior Hailey Batista, who went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI.
