CARY, N.C. --It was a nailbiter on Friday, as the Delaware State Hornets came up one run short of victory, losing to the North Carolina Central Eagles 2-1.
Senior Mayanah Mclntosh (4-7) got the ball to start for Delaware State (13-24, 4-12) and took the loss. The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on eight hits, allowing two walks and striking out five.
In the batter's box, the Hornets were led by senior Hailey Ramberg, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a walk and an RBI. Senior Uxua Modrego compiled a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4. Sophomore Kayla Lester also contributed for Delaware State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate.
Trailing 2-0, the Hornets first put runs on the board in the sixth inning. Delaware State plated a run on a based-loaded walk by Ramberg. The Hornets were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame. North Carolina Central was led offensively by senior Maegan Garrison, who went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Junior Jaden Davis led the Eagles pitching staff, throwing seven innings of one-run ball.Â
