PRINCESS ANNE, MD --Jevin Muniz and Martaz Robinson combined to score 40 total points - 67.8 percent of Delaware State's points - but the Hornets fell to the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks 67-59 on the road Thursday.
The Hornets (13-17, 6-8) had two players score in double figures, led by Muniz, who had 28 points. Robinson tacked on 12 points, six rebounds and two steals and Alston Andrews added six points, eight rebounds and two steals.
Led by Robinson's two offensive rebounds, Delaware State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in nine second chance points.
Delaware State's defense held Maryland-Eastern Shore to only 18.8 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 12-11 advantage, Delaware State went on a 7-0 run with 9:55 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Muniz, to increase its lead to 19-11. The Hornets then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 29-28 advantage. Delaware State took advantage of six offensive rebounds to score five second chance points out of 29 total in the period
Maryland-Eastern Shore proceeded to take a 59-49 lead before Delaware State went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Caleb Surgers' layup, to shrink the deficit to 59-56 with 3:03 to go in the contest. Maryland-Eastern Shore responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 67-59. Delaware State got out on the break in the period, scoring seven fast break points. Delaware State played solid perimeter defense, holding Maryland-Eastern Shore to 19 percent from three point land on 16 attempts. The Delaware State defense forced 13 turnovers.
