GAME 1 | Coppin State 8, Delaware State 7
BALTIMORE, Md. --An outstanding offensive output was not enough for Delaware State on Friday. The Hornets put up seven runs, but could not hold the Coppin State Eagles at bay, and were bested 8-7.
Senior Yurcaba (2-5) got the ball to start for Delaware State (7-13, 1-4) and took the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Lester came across to score the lone run of the inning for Delaware State and get them on the board.
After the Eagles rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Hornets came back to retake the lead in the third inning. Delaware State picked up two runs when a single from junior Speicher brought home senior Munoz and senior Modrego Lope, which brought the score to 3-1 in favor of the Hornets.
Delaware State kept Coppin State scoreless before building their lead to 4-1 the following inning.
Delaware State gave up the lead they built in the fourth, but got back on the scoreboard in the sixth trailing 7-4. The three-run fram for the Hornets was puncuated by a two-run single off the bat of freshman Santana. evening the score at 7-7. Coppin State then scored one time over the remaining one inning to break the tie and grab the 8-7 win. Coppin State was led offensively by sophomore Manaia Fonoti, who went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and an RBI. Freshman Emily Quintero led the Eagles pitching staff, throwing seven innings of seven-run ball.
