DOVER -- The Delaware State softball team scored three runs in the fifth inning to highlight its 10-1 victory over Bowie State in game 2 of a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs won the opener 5-1.
The Hornets started game two off hot, with one run in the first and four in the second. Kaitlyn Hortin singled to left, allowing Sanaa Brown to score. Emma Crowe tripled to center, bringing in Kaitlyn Horton. Kayla Lester followed with a single to bring in Emma Crowe. Kayla Lester stole second and third and gave the Hornets a 4-0 lead after Ashlyn Schmidt singled to center. Bowie State scored a run in the top of the third, and the Hornets scored two more in the bottom of the third. After a scoreless fourth, with Kaitlyn Horton on third, Kayla Lester singled to right to bring in Horton. Crowe and Leeani Hutcherson-Howard were on second and third, Mikaela Francois singles to right to score both runners on base, to give the Hornets the win in the bottom of the fifth. McKenzie Yurcaba pitched a five-inning game to earn the win for Delaware State, allowing four hits and one run, while striking out one.
In the opener, Bowie State scored first with a run in the top of the first inning. Delaware State did not tally another run until the seventh. Horton singled to the pitcher, allowing Valeria Santos to score the only run for the Hornets.
Bowie State scored two in the third, one in the fourth and sixth inning.
Khyliah Reynolds was the losing pitcher in the opener for Delaware State, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out one.

The Hornets return to action on Tuesday, February 27 when they host Thomas Jefferson University in a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
