CARY, North Carolina - The Delaware State University women's tennis team participated in the 2023 Women's MEAC Individual Championships, held at the Cary Tennis Park in North Carolina. Despite a strong showing, the Hornets saw their run end in the quarterfinals for both singles and doubles.
In singles competition, the Hornets Camilla Mitolo advanced to the quarterfinals after an intense three-set victory over North Carolina Central's freshman standout and No. 4 seed, Marianna Zottoli. Mitolo secured the win with a scoreline of 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. However, her tournament journey ended in the quarterfinals against Nalanda Teixeira da Silva of South Carolina State University (SCSU).
The Hornets' doubles teams also faced tough competition in the quarterfinals. Mitolo paired with Eva Golembiovski, but the duo fell short against the No. 3 seed, losing 3-6, 3-6 to SCSU's doubles team. Meanwhile, the pairing of Lucia Casas Blas and Kit-Yi Kaye Au-Yeung played a thrilling quarterfinal match but narrowly lost to top seed Chursina and Semlali from SCSU in a closely contested battle, with a score of 6-7 5-7.
Despite the quarterfinal exits, the Hornets showcased resilience and determination throughout the tournament, gaining valuable experience for future competitions.
The MEAC Individual Championships concluded the Hornets Fall season. The spring season will begin on February 6 at home against Drexel.
