DOVER, DE --The Delaware State women's basketball team got a 25-point showing from the bench, but fell 64-58 to the North Carolina Central Eagles at home Monday.
The Hornets (6-12, 2-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Tyshonne Tollie, who had 16 points and nine rebounds. Ja-Naiah Perkins-Jackson tacked on 15 points and two steals off the bench and Denijsha Wilson chipped in as well with 10 points and three steals from the bench.
Led by Tollie's five offensive rebounds, Delaware State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in 18 second chance points.
Delaware State forced 22 North Carolina Central turnovers while committing 21 themselves in Monday's game. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 21 points on the offensive end of the floor. Noami Zulueta led the way individually with four steals.
How It Happened
Delaware State kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 13-12.
Delaware State fought back to tie the game at 16-16 before going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Wilson, to take a 21-16 lead. The Eagles then came roaring back to take a 37-33 lead heading into halftime.
Following halftime, Delaware State kept the Eagles from growing their lead before going on a 5-0 run to grab a 43-42 lead with 4:38 to go in the third. North Carolina Central responded to seize a 52-49 lead entering the fourth quarter. Delaware State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.
Delaware State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 64-58. Delaware State took advantage of four North Carolina Central turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways. The Hornets held the Eagles to only 36.6 percent shooting from the field. The Delaware State bench made an impact by scoring 25 points to its scoring output. Ja-Naiah Perkins-Jackson and Denijsha Wilson came off the bench to score 15 and 10 points, respectively. The Delaware State defense forced 22 turnovers. Delaware State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 15 offensive boards in the game.
The Hornets return to action Saturday, February 3 when they travel to Norfolk State University in continued MEAC Conference play. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
