RECORD-SETTING DAY PUTS HORNETS IN NEC CHAMPIONSHIP HUNT

Dover, Del. (Apr. 24, 2023) --- A record-setting performance by the Delaware State women's golf team has the Hornets within striking distance of the 2023 Northeast Conference championship entering the final round of play at the LPGA International Hills Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Hornets shot a school-record combined team score of 290, shattering the old mark by four strokes, to vault into second place in the 11-team standings with a two-day total of 603 (+27). The Hornets' day-two total was seven strokes better than the nearest competitor. Defending NEC champ and current leader Sacred Heart posted a combined score of 297 today, and has a two-day team score of 600 (+24). The Pioneers lost seven strokes to Delaware State today after leading the Hornets by 10 after day 1. Delaware State is nine shots ahead of third place Farleigh Dickinson (612; +36) and 13 better than fourth place Howard (616; +40).
Individually, Delaware State's Anna Ferreyra-Heit blitzed the field today, topping all players with a score of 68, three strokes better than her nearest competitors. She has jumped to second place in the field of 55 with a two-day total of 144, just one shot behind first place Chantal El Chaib of Sacred Heart (143), who posted a  score of 71 today. Ferreyra-Heit was in a four-way tie for seventh place entering today's second round.
Delaware State's other four competitors also turned in solid performances today. Sydney Scraba was tied for fourth in the field with a day-two score of 73 to climb into a tie for 10th on the leader board with a two-day total of 154 (+10). DSU's Amber Pennington, Emily Murray and Estelle Verny also improved on their day-one scores to join Scraba in a tie for 10th in the standings.
"This was a historic day for our program, especially considering the competition and the pressure to stay in the championship hunt," said Delaware State head coach Rick McCall. "Today's performance is a testament to the hard work our ladies have put in and their competitive spirit. It's exciting to be in a position to compete for a championship in our first season in this highly competitive conference."
