Dover, Del. (Nov. 2, 2022) --- The Delaware State women's basketball team gave a glimpse of what it hopes is a sign of things to come with a 71-50 exhibition win over Georgian Court in Memorial Hall this evening.
Ten of the 11 players who competed for the Lady Hornets are new to the team.
One of the newcomers, guard
Savannah Brooks (fr.; Taneytown, Md.), led all players with 19 points on seven-for-11 shooting from the field, including three three-pointers on six attempts. She also had a game-high five steals to help key the Lady Hornets' defensive effort.
Alexis Moragne  (sr.; Bronx, N.Y.), the lone 2021-22 holdover to compete for the Lady Hornets in the contest, was second among all players with 13 points (5-11 FG; 3-4 FT).
Another new face,
Sydney Watkins (sr.; Wanaque, N.J.) , came off the bench to add 11 points, highlighted by three three-point field goals.
Delaware State led 18-10 after the first quarter, and held an 11-point lead (39-28) at intermission.
The Lady Hornets outscored the Lions 17-5 to start the third quarter, and opened up a 56-33 lead on a three-pointer by Watkins with 2:25 left in the quarter.
Delaware State led 61-36 heading into the fourth quarter.
Defensively, the Lady Hornets held Georgian Court to 19-for-59 shooting from the field (32.2%), including four-of-17 on three-point shots (23.5%).
Delaware State also won the rebound battle 45-36, and forced the Lions to commit 22 turnovers. Â Â Â
"I was pleased with the energy level and the team work we displayed tonight," said Delaware State second-year head coach
E.C. Hill. "Of course, there are some areas we need to clean up, but overall it was a good start."
The Lady Hornets tip-off the 2022-23 season with three games on the road, beginning with a two-game swing in Big 10 country to face Michigan State (Nov. 7) and Michigan (Nov. 9). Delaware State will also visit Hampton (Nov. 12) before the home opener against Wilmington (Del.) University on Nov. 15 (7:00 p.m.).
