Phila., Pa. (Feb. 14, 2021) ---The Delaware State women's soccer team scored first, but couldn't add to it in a 4-1 loss to St. Joseph's in the spring opener for both teams in frigid conditions at Sweeny Field this afternoon.
It didn't take long for the Hornets to get on the board as newcomer
Mackenzie Burns (fr.) scored on DSU's first shot of the season from the left wing off a feed from
Jada Lee (jr.) past St. Joe's keeper Kathleen Rivera in the ninth minute (8:32) to open the scoring.
The Hawks had a couple chances to tie the score in the 20
th minute, but one shot hit the crossbar and a second attempt was saved by DSU goal keeper
Ashley Maribo (fr.) a few seconds later.
St. Joe's finally broke through in the 23
rd minute (22:41) when Morgan Bower found the net to tie the match at 1-1. Aleksa Peev and Sofia Filippo were credited with assists on the score.
The Hawks took the lead about nine minutes later (31
st minute) when Kayla Flanders beat Maribo off of feeds by Izzy Greene and Ashley Orendac.
St. Joe's led 2-1 at intermission.
The second period was scoreless for nearly 29 minutes before the Hawks broke through to double their lead. Chloe Khelil scored the goal on a header off a corner kick by Natalie Nevins in the 73
rd minute to give the home team a 3-1 advantage.
St. Joseph's struck again about nine minutes later to close out the scoring. Sam Dumont scored the goal with the assist going to Rachel Brown late in the 82
nd minute.
The Hornets were outshot 21-4 in the contest. Burns had three of DSU's shots, including each of the three on goal.
Maribo had eight saves in her debut in goal for the Hornets.
Delaware State returns to action this Friday (Feb. 19) with a home match against Mount St. Mary's (Md.). Start time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
