Dover, Del. (Aug. 22, 2019) --- The Delaware State women's soccer team can opens its 2019 campaign with two road matches, beginning Fri. (Aug. 23) at St. Peter's (N.J.). Start time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Caven Point in Jersey City.
The Hornets and Peahens are meeting or the seventh straight season. DSU won the 2018 encounter 1-0 on an overtime goal by Savannah Ay in Frederica, Del., to even the series at 3-3. The home team has won each meeting in the series.
St. Peter's, a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) with 3-12-1 overall and 3-6-1 in league matches last season.
Delaware State returns 13 veterans from its 2018 squad. Ay, a forward, is the team's top returning scorer. She was second on the Hornets with four goals, including two game winners, and eight points as a freshman in 2018. Alyssa Coustenis (sr.) had a goal and two assists to rank fourth on the Hornets with four points a year ago.
DSU also returns veteran defender Toni Washington (sr.), along with forwards/midfielder Braxton Clark (sr.), Katrina Silva (sr.), Jasmine Warren (sr.) and Ashley Ventura (jr.).
Franchesska Ramirez (so.) is the Hornets' most experienced goal keeper, competing in four matches as a freshman in 2018.
The list of 2019 newcomers include forwards Kiarah Jones (fr.; Harrisburg, Pa.) and Geligne Franklin (fr.; Silver Spring, Md.). Franklin scored four goals in the Hornets' two preseason exhibition matches, while Franklin tallied three in the season tune-ups.
Delaware State will continue its season-opening road swing at Wagner on Sun. (Aug. 25) in Staten Island, N.Y. (1:00 p.m.)
The Hornets' 2019 home opener is Aug. 29 against VMI. Start time is 4:00 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
