Dover, Del. (Apr. 19, 2019) --- Norfolk State, the leader in the 2019 MEAC North race, strengthened its hold on the division with a doubleheader sweep of Delaware State today. The Spartans won the first game 9-5 and completed the sweep with a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, Kylee Lopez was two-for-four with a home run and three runs batted in to lead the Spartans' 12-hit attack.
Lilly Potter added two hits and two RBI for NSU.
Jaelyn Baker and Vanessa Barron had two hits and two RBI each for Delaware State.
The Spartans opened the scoring with five runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Potter.
The Hornets answered with four runs in the bottom of the first, with Baker's two-run double the big hit in the inning.
Lopez singled in a run in the fourth to stretch the Spartans' lead to 6-4. She gave NSU an insurance run when she led off the seventh with a home run to center field.
Barron doubled in a run in the Delaware State first and had a run-scoring single in the sixth.
In the nightcap, Skylar Swain tossed a complete game, while Gabby Vaughn and Jazzmaine Hammond drove in three runs each to lead the Spartans.
Jonah Cunnigan was three-for-three and Jade King had two hits for the Hornets.
Vaughn singled in a run in the top of the first to open the scoring for the Spartans. She had a two-run double and Hammond drove in three runs in Norfolk State's five-run third inning.
Each team had 10 hits and left seven runners on base.
The Hornets and Spartans will wrap up the series with a single on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the DSU softball complex.
