Newark, Del. (Apr. 10, 2019) --- Delaware scored five runs in each of the first two innings and never looked back in a 13-3 softball victory over Delaware State today.
Karolina Flores and Brittney Mendoza drove in three runs each to lead the Hens. Flores was three-for-three at the plate, including two doubles, while Mendoza was among four Delaware players with two hits.
Delaware State scored its three runs in the fifth inning to snap a 25-inning scoreless streak.
Delaware's five-run first inning was highlighted by Mendoza's two-run double and a run-scoring two-base hit by Flores.
Hanna Garber singled in two runs, while Flores doubled in a run in the Hens' second inning.
Flores drove in her third run of the game on a single in the UD third and Mendoza collected her third RBI on a double in the fourth.
Jaelyn Baker had a two-run double and Jordan Casey singled in a run in the Hornets' three-run fifth. Baker and Casey each had two hits in three at bats in the game.
Sarah Piening (9-11) pitched a complete game to earn the win for the Hens, allowing seven hits and the three DSU runs, while striking out six and walking one in five innings.
Brianna Baker (3-13) took the loss for Delaware State.
The game was called after Delaware State batted in the top of the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule. The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but the second game was cancelled by agreement of the teams.
The Hornets return to action with two games at UMBC this Sat. (Apr. 13). Game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Baltimore, Md.
