DSU SOFTBALL TO TAKE ON FAIRFIELD IN HOME OPENER

Dover, Del. (Mar. 19, 2019) --- The Delaware State softball team is home for the first time this season on Wednesday (Mar. 20). The Hornets will take on Fairfield in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the DSU softball complex on campus.

The Hornets hope that playing in front of their home fans will spark a change in fortunes for the team.  DSU has lost seven straight and 13 of their last 14 games to stand at 2-14 this season.

Delaware State has been idle since competing in the HBCU Classic Tournament near Atlanta, Ga., on March 8-10.

Despite the slow start, some Hornets are putting up solid numbers this season.

Shortstop Jordan Casey (jr.) is second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in hitting with a .429 batting average (18-for-42), while second baseman Jasmine Melgoza (jr.) is eighth in the league with a .370 average (20-for-54).

Also, DSU freshman outfielder Jonah Cunnigan is batting .333 (16-for-48) to rank third on the team and 15th in the MEAC.

Melgoza, a Preseason All-MEAC First Team selection, was named MEAC Player-of-the-Week on Mar. 5 after collecting 10 hits in 17 at bats (.588), with a home run, two doubles and four scored in a five-game stretch, while Cunnigan was named MEAC Rookie-of-the-Week that day after batting .571 (8-for-14)  with three stolen bases and four runs scored during that same five-day span.

Fairfield was 11-3 this season heading into a Tuesday doubleheader at Villanova.
